In the late 1960s a small association of breeders in Germany developed what was to be a dignified and intelligent hunting dog. The German Wirehaired pointer is a product of the German Shorthand Pointer, the Griffin, the Pointer, the Bloodhound, and finally, the Airdale. The new breed acquired the best qualities of each breed; the fine sense of smell, strength, balance, lively disposition, a fine coat and harmonious lines. The Wirehaired has a brown coat sometimes with and sometimes without markings. It has a lively gate, and is a spectacular hunter; for pleasing and assuming a sculptural pose with nose and tail raised. German Wirehaired Pointers are very affectionate toward their owners, but are often jealous of other dogs in the group.
